 New Salem Village Scene

Wednesday April 23rd was a beautiful Spring morning. It was 6:00 AM and twelve Lostant third graders boarded the school bus for an exciting adventure. We ate lots of doughnuts and drank lots of milk. There were many sleepy children on board.
We were off to Springfield.  Our first stop was the State Capitol Building. It was breathtaking.  This stop was added because we arrived in Springfield an hour before our tour was scheduled at The Abraham Lincoln Museum.  The children were amazed at the statues of Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas on the capitol grounds. We all took lots of pictures ,you will be able to view at The Academic fair May 16th.
The weather was sunny and warm. This was an added delight to our trip. We were warmly greeted at The Museum by our docent  and given lots of instructions.  The children were amazed by the museum. It was a wonderful experience.  We traveled from Lincoln's boyhood through his presidential years.  We saw an amazing movie in the Union Theater, " Through Lincoln's Eyes."
Then it was off to New Salem Park and a tour of forty cabins and businesses that had once been Lincoln's home as a young adult.  This park is a good visit for anyone. We learned what a cooper was, we attended a one room school house, and we saw a spinning wheel.
Mrs. Wright, the children, and I thank The Lostant School Board and Dr. Smith for giving us the opportunity for this trip.  It was great!
