About the Teacher

If you want to know about who I am just read on.  Smile  My name is Dawn Kennedy.  I was born and raised in 'The Big Land' of Labrador City.  I have two wonderful parents who have been 'anchored' here after retirement by three grandchildren.  I have one sibling, an older brother, who has two sons, one is in highschool and the other is employed by IOC.  My husband and I have one beautiful daughter in grade 9.  She is the biggest joy of our lives.

I began my teaching career with a Music replacement in Corner Brook between two schools.  There I directed two school choirs and was responsible to develop an enrichment program for grade 1 Language Arts.

In the fall of 1998 I began teaching in central Newfoundland.  I moved to a small town of Buchans, where I would stay for a few years.  There I met many lifelong friends and a very special man whom I would marry.  My first classroom was in a portable trailer outside the school due to the school not having enough rooms.  My first class had 12 grade 6 students who continue to have a very special place in my heart and memories.

In September of 1999 we had a brand new K-12 school in Buchans, Lakeside Academy.  Over the next few years I taught grade 5 and multi-grades 4-5.  At the same time I was also teaching a K-9 Music program and was involved in a number of extra-curricular activities with the school.  I directed junior and senior choirs, a drama club which put off some very entertaining and successful musicals, I was head of the student council and a member of the school council, for one year serving as the chair.

My daughter was born in August 2003.  We moved back to Labrador when she was 3 months old.  Although still on maternity leave, I wanted to 'get my foot in the door' with the Labrador School board so I began substituting that Spring and continued substituting in all the local schools for the following year..

My first fulltime placement at A. P. Low Primary was in September of 2005.  I had a grade 3 replacement position for part of the year followed by a Primary Phys Ed Position.  The next year I began a span of 3 years teaching 1/2 Kindergarten.  This was in conjunction with 1/2 Core French, 1/2 Core Art and then 1/2 Technology.  This followed with a year as the Literacy Media Support Teacher.  I have placed as a grade 1 teacher for a few years.  I had a few short term replacement positions in Music over the next few years, but my main position was with grade 1.  I am beginning my position as now the Music teacher for over 400 students at A. P. Low Primary for my second year.  I feel so lucky to be teaching in this position.

Teaching keeps me quite busy, especially being a working mom, but I have several hobbies as well.  Some of my favourite hobbies include dancing, singing, and being involved in different fitness programs.  I attend church and church functions on a regular basis with my daughter.  Hobbies I had as a child that I still enjoy today are playing the piano, downhill skiing, ski-doing and swimming.  I especially love spending time with my awesome family and the best of friends.
