WE FOLLOW THE 'I CARE' RULES...
The code of conduct at A. P. Low Primary is based on the framework of the I CARE program (www.peaceeducation.com). Children' s behavior is based on five rules, which form the basis of our conversations with the children, both in a proactive way and a reactive way (i.e. after an inappropriate act).
The five rules are:
1. We listen to each other./On s' écoute les uns les autres.
2. Hands are for helping, not hurting./ Les mains servent à aider non à blesser.
3. We use I-Care Language./On emploie le langage sympa.
4. We care about each other' s feelings./On respecte les sentiments des uns et des autres.
5. We are responsible for what we say and do./On est responsable de ses paroles et de ses gestes.
Our approach to discipline is that self-reflection is more important than punishment . Offenses are seen as teachable moments , and discussion centers around appropriate and inappropriate choices and empathy-building. At the same time, children are shown the link between their behavior and undesirable consequences. Therefore, we do use consequences in a progressive manner, with consequences and discussions becoming more serious with repetition and escalation of actions.
